NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Following a spectacular all-around senior season, Carleton College wing Scott Theisen (Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) was named to the D3hoops.com All-West Region First Team. While his numbers even surpassed these levels, he was the only NCAA Men’s Basketball player across any level (Division I, II, and III) to average more than 16 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals this season.
Theisen is one of five players tabbed to the All-Region First Team. He is the 11th Carleton men’s basketball player selected to any All-Region squad, with that group accumulating a total of 17 such honors. Theisen is the seventh Knight named All-Region first team. (SEE FULL CHART BELOW)
Due to an injury elsewhere on the roster, Theisen split the season between guard and forward. The change in positions did not affect his play at either end of the court, though, as he turned in one of the best all-round seasons in college hoops. Two weeks ago he was voted to the All-MIAC first team, the second straight year he was recognized by conference coaches.
Theisen paced the MIAC with 5.6 assists per game—which ranked 18th across NCAA Division III—and 2.19 steals per contest. He finished fourth in the conference in both scoring (17.1 points) and rebounds (7.4). Theisen ranked second in the region in assists, fourth in steals, 10th in scoring, and 21st in rebounding. In fact, he is the only player in the West Region to rank among his conference’s top-8 in all four of those statistical categories.
Twice voted to the D3hoops.com Team-of-the-Week, he notched a pair of triple-doubles this season, becoming the first Division III player to accomplish that feat since 2009-10. Theisen is 1 of 3 men’s players across all three NCAA divisions to post two triple-doubles this season.
He recorded the first triple-double in program history during a win over Concordia on Jan. 23, 2013, concluding the contest with 22 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists. He followed that up 17 days later with a 21-point, 10-rebound, and 10-assist performance at Macalester.
Some of Theisen’s best games this season came against the top two teams in the conference. He averaged 21.3 points, 5.7 assists, and 4.3 rebounds in three games against national No. 1 University of St. Thomas. That included a career-high-tying 31 points as the Knights gave the Tommies all they could handle in the semifinals of the MIAC Playoffs. Theisen’s stat line against second-place Concordia averaged out to be 26.5 points, 13.0 rebounds, 7.5 assists, and 2.0 steals.
Theisen concluded his career with 1,100 points, ranking 19th all-time at Carleton. He totaled 529 rebounds in his four seasons with the Knights, while also accumulating 302 assists (fifth at Carleton) and 141 steals (tied for seventh). He dished out 151 assists during the 2012-13 campaign, the second-highest single-season total in team history. He joined Zach Johnson '09 as the only players in program history with at least 1,000 career points, 500 rebounds, 200 assists, and 100 steals.
