NORTHFIELD, Minn.––Scott Theisen (Sr./Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) tallied 25 points, eight rebounds and seven assists and Tyler Goetz (Sr./Chaska, Minn.) added his first career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds as host Carleton College cruised past Bethany Lutheran University, 80-58.

The Knights (5-3) shot 48 percent from the field and limited the Vikings (2-8) to 29 percent shooting. The win snapped Carleton’s two-game losing streak.

Alex Weldon paced BLU with 16 points.

The Knights never really left the game in doubt, using a 13-1 spurt midway through the first half to sprint to a 24-10 advantage. BLU pulled within nine points after a Weldon triple with less than five minutes left in the half, but the Knights outscored the Vikings 15-8 to close the period and led 45-29 at the break.

Carleton doused any Viking hopes of a comeback, opening the half on a 19-7 run. Meanwhile, the Knights defense clamped down as the Vikings went 4-for-20 from three-point range over the final 20 minutes. Carleton’s lead approached 30 points, allowing Carleton head coach Guy Kalland to play his entire roster in earning his 397th career victory.

Tom Sawatzke (Sr./Monticello, Minn.) added 18 points and four assists for the Knights while Shane McSparron (So./Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) was also in double figures with 14 points while adding five rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots.

The win marked the 397th career victory for Carleton head coach Guy Kalland, who is in his 29th season at Carleton.

Carleton is now off until the New Year, when they’ll face conference favorite St. Thomas in St. Paul on Wednesday, Jan. 2 at 7:30 p.m. The game can be heard locally on 920 AM KDHL and via an audio simulcast on Carleton athletics website.
