Knights Fall at Concordia on OT Buzzer-Beater

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Scott Theisen (Sr./Champlin, Minn./Champlin Park) notched his fourth career double-double as he recorded career-bests with 31 points and 14 rebounds as the Carleton College men’s basketball team lost at Concordia College, 78-75 in overtime. The Knights, who have already won a trio of games in the closing seconds this season, were the victims this time as Ebo Nana-Kweson hit a running three-pointer at the horn.

Theisen’s scoring output was the highest by a Knight since Zach Johnson ’09 poured in 36 against St. Olaf on Feb. 2, 2009.

The opening half was a back-and-forth affair with the Knights (4-3, 2-1 MIAC) eventually carrying a slim 35-33 advantage into halftime thanks to a Tyler Goetz (Sr./Chaska, Minn./Chaska) three pointer with 0:19 seconds left.

Both teams heated up after the break as Carleton shot 50 percent in the second half and Concordia (4-4, 2-2 MIAC) made 58 percent of its field-goal attempts after the break.

The Knights had the final shot of regulation, but Tom Sawatzke’s (Sr./Monticello, Minn./Monticello) contested jumper was off the mark as clock hit 0:00, leaving the score deadlocked at 68-68.

Nana-Kweson drained a three pointer on the opening possession of overtime to give the Cobbers their first lead since late in the first half. Theisen answered with a triple of his own, then knocked down a pair of free throws to push the visitors back in front by a pair midway through the extra period.

After Concordia knotted the score at 73-73, Sawatzke converted in the lane with 1:09 still to go, but Jason Huus—who paced the Cobbers with 22 points—tied the score back up with his bucket in the paint.

Carleton missed two shots on its next trip down the floor, and following a rebound, Nana-Kweson got the outlet, drove toward the middle and drained a floater as time expired.

Sawatzke finished with 14 points, and Goetz matched his career-high with 13 points. John Eckert (Fy./North Judson, Ind./North Judson) narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds before fouling out with 3:37 still to play in regulation.

Brandon Fisher came off the bench for 17 points, and Nana-Kweson contributed 16 points for the hosts.

Carleton concludes its 2012 portion of the schedule with a non-conference tussle on Friday, Dec. 14. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. Knights Online will feature live video—including a high-definition feed—and live stats.
