COLFAX, Wis – The No. 21-ranked Carleton College men’s cross country team traveled Wisconsin to run its toughest race so far this season and came away with a ninth-place finish at the UW-Eau Claire BlueGold Invitational.
The 26-team field included eight nationally rated Division III teams, including the eventual team champion, No. 2 UW-La Crosse. The Knights finished ahead of ranked teams from St. Thomas, UW-Stevens Point, and UW-Platteville as well as Winona State, a NCAA Division II program.
Leading the way for Carleton was sophomore Hart Hornor (Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt), who finished 12th overall in a time of 25:17. Horner fought off a week-long illness to propel the Knights to a team score of 283, besting St Thomas squad by five points.
Also running well for Carleton was senior Jacob Hoerger (Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill), who was 47th overall in 26:14. Joe Haase (So./Madison, Wis./Madison West) stepped up with a good race, placing 71st. Ben Withbroe (Fy./Takoma Park, Md./Albert Einstein) and Guthrie Cunningham (Sr./Finland, Minn./Duluth East) rounded out the scoring for Carleton with times of 26:51 and 26:56 as they placed 75th and 78th, respectively.
Rookies Nick Carlsen (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) and Walter Edstrom (Plano, Texas/Plano West) placed 85th and 98th, giving Carleton seven finishers among the top 100 in a field of 453 runners.
After taking a week off from competition, Carleton will go with split-squad action on Saturday, Oct. 19 as the team will race at both Lewis and Clark (Ore.) and UW-La Crosse.
