Knights Win Second Straight Race in Iowa

GRINNELL, Iowa – The Carleton College men’s cross country team captured the title at the Les Duke Invitational. The Knights are ranked No. 10 in the central region and defeated two other regionally-ranked opponents, No. 5 Wartburg and No. 8 Grinnell  as well as 11 other squads. Carleton placed a trio of runners in the top 10 and took advantage of cool weather and fast course conditions to conquer a field of 166 runners.

Leading the way for Carleton was Hart Hornor (So./Seattle, Wash./Roosevelt) who finished second with an outstanding time of 24:51. Marcus Huderle (Sr./Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) was fifth in 25:21, and Jonah Barry (So./Madison, Wis./Madison West) finished in seventh with a time of 25:25.

“Hart, Marcus, Jonah, and Jacob (Hoerger) all had outstanding races again this week,” said head coach Dave Ricks. “Just a tremendous start to the season. We have now bumped off four of the top eight teams in the region, and school hasn't even started yet.”

Also running well for the Knights were Jacob Hoerger (Sr./Chapel Hill, N.C./Chapel Hill) and Thor Laack-Veeder (Jr./Madison, Wis./LaFollette). Hoerger earned 12th with a 26:01 time, while Thor Laack-Veeder was 17th with 26:51 to round out the scoring.

Not figuring in the team’s point total, but running great races were Noah Laack-Veeder (Jr./Madison, Wis./LaFollette) in 22nd, Guthrie Cunningham (Sr./Finland, Minn./Duluth East) in 27th, and Evan Olawsky (So./Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) in 43rd.

Coach Ricks is decidedly pleased with his team and their start to the season, “We are having fun!”

Carleton will get its next crack at upsetting the regional rankings when the Knights make the short trek across town to run at the St. Olaf Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 21. The women race at 10 a.m. followed by the men at 10:45 a.m.
