NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- The Carleton College men’s cross country team battled neighboring St Olaf College in the annual Karhu Shoe Race, with the Ole men coming out on top 18-37.
Noah Laack-Veeder (Jr./Madison, Wis./LaFollette) led the Carleton squad, finishing the race with a time of 27:04. Laack-Veeder was back in 17th at the halfway mark of the race but stayed patient and moved up to a third-place finish to break up St. Olaf’s stranglehold on the front of the pack.
Nick Carlsen (Fy./Danbury, Conn./Danbury) completed the course in 27:39, good for an eighth-place finish. Next over for the Knights were Walter Edstrom (Fy./Plano, Texas/Plano West) in 12th with a 27:52 and Ben Hiskes (So./Storrs, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) in 18th in a time of 28:46.
Evan Olawsky (So./Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) was 22nd in 28:53, followed by Patrick O’Reilly (Fy./Wilmette, IL./New Trier) in 24th place. O’Reilly’s time of 28:59 was a personal best, breaking the 29 minute barrier for the first time. Next was Bill Grimm (Jr./Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) in 25th with a 29:28.
Tanner Fliss (So./Green Bay, Wis./Preble), Gustav Danielsson (Jr./Westfield, NJ./Westfield), and Oliver Heywood (Jr./Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood) also competed for Carleton.
While the Oles wore their regular competition uniforms, the Knights competed while in costume, a long-standing tradition at this festive year-end event, which features the athletes not competing in next week’s NCAA Central Region Championships. That race will be held at St Olaf College on Saturday, Nov. 16 starting at 12:15pm.
