COON RAPIDS, Minn. – After the third and final day of action at the 2011 MIAC Championships, the Carleton College men’s golf team finished in eighth place. Brian Chesley (Jr./Mankato, Minn./Mankato West) paced the Knights during the final round, firing a five-over par 77 for his best round over the three-day tournament.
While individually there were some ups and downs during the 54-hole event, the Knights were extremely consistent. They posted team totals of 325-326-324 for a three-day total of 975. Carleton bested Macalester College and Saint Mary’s University, who finished with team totals of 980 and 1,002 strokes, respectively.
After shooting identical four-over par 76’s during the first two rounds, Aaron Buckley (So./San Diego, Calif./Francis Parker School) remained the overall leader for the team, finishing in a tie for 21st as he carded an 80 on Monday.
Brian Gilmore (Sr./Edina, Minn./Edina) shot 82 in the final round, one stroke better than his first- and second-round scores. Turner Wadington (Sr./St. Charles, Ill./Elgin Academy) was the other scorer, firing an 85 on Monday.
The title went to St. Thomas who finished the weekend with a total of 897 over the three days. The Tommies captured their first conference title since 1980 and earned the MIAC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championships in the spring.
ROUND 2 RECAP
After day two of the 2011 MIAC Championships the Carleton College men's golf team remains in eighth place. Aaron Buckley continues to pace the Knights as he fired a four-over par 76 for the second straight round. In fact, this is the third consecutive round in which Buckley has carded a 76, matching his season-best score. He is tied for 15th heading into Monday’s final round. Brian Gilmore equaled his first-round performance with another 83, a score matched by Turner Wadington, who trimmed two strokes off his opening round tally. Brian Chesley added an 84, leaving the Knights with a 651 total after two days. The final round of the 54-hole of the tournament will wrap up tomorrow at the Bunker Hills Golf Course. The Knights are projected to tee off at 9:00 a.m.
ROUND 1 RECAP Aaron Buckley fired a four-over par 76 to pace the Carleton College men’s golf team during the opening round of the 2011 MIAC Championships. Buckley is tied for seventh in the 50-player field which waited about an hour to tee off due to a frost delay. Buckley matched his season-best score, achieved in the second round of last weekend’s Macalester Invitational. Brian Chesley carded an opening round 81, while Brian Gilmore fired an 83 and Turner Wadington an 85 to give the Knights a first-day total of 325, which ranked eighth in the 10-team field, one behind Augsburg. The 54-hole tournament continues on Sunday at Bunker Hills Golf Course. Carleton is projected to tee off at 11:20 a.m.
