Knights Clip Cardinals in Ryder Cup Match

Turner Wadington, men's golf action

Turner Wadington was part of Carleton's top pairing during its Ryder Cup-style match against Saint Mary's

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The Carleton College men’s golf team opened the 2011-12 season with a modified Ryder Cup match against Saint Mary’s University. The Knights took advantage of the familiarity that comes from contesting this year’s meeting on Carleton’s home course—Northfield Golf Club—to secure a 14.5-6.5 victory.

One of the only match play competitions on the schedule each year, every foursome included two players from each school. For the first six holes, it was best-ball match play with a point going to the side that won or a half-point if the team’s tied. Over the next six holes, it was match play between one Carleton golfer and one SMU golfer, and over the final six holes, it was match play against the second opponent in that group.

Each pairing (Carleton 1 & 2 vs. SMU 1 & 2, etc.) had a total of five points at stake, with a point going to the side that won each six-hole competition or a half-point if the teams tied.

The team’s top pairings split their five points with Brian Gilmore (Sr./Edina, Minn.) and Turner Wadington (St. Charles, Ill.) prevailing in the best-ball portion and taking 1.5 points over the final six holes.

Carleton’s No. 3 and No. 4 pairing of Jeff Berg (So./Wood Dale, Ill./Wheaton Academy) with Ted Harrington (Jr./Frisco, Texas/Wakeland) earned 4.5 points, while the Knights got their biggest bump from the next pairing of junior Brian Chesely (Mankato, Minn./Mankato West) and first-year Jorde Ranum (Spring Lake Park, Minn.). That duo won all five points against Will Johnson and Andy Scheib.

Due to uneven roster sizes, matches four and five were only worth three points. Jake Reznick (Sr./New York, N.Y./Fieldston School) earned a point during match play against Alex North, and Evan Osborne (Jr./Phoenixville, Pa./Great Valley) came away with 1.5 points during his match play.

The Knights will be in action this weekend at the Augsburg Invitational in Ham Lake, Minn.
