Knights unable to wrest Rusty Putter from Oles’ grasp

NORTHFIELD, Minn. — The Carleton College men’s golf team engaged cross-town foe St. Olaf in the annual battle for the “Rusty Putter.” This year’s season-finale event was held at Willingers Golf Course.

The Oles retained possession of the keepsake by a 4.5 to 1.5 score using modified match play. The first six holes of each match are played using a best-ball format. The next six holes use an alternate shot format, and the last six holes are played using a scramble format. Each set of six holes is worth one point.

Jorde Ranum (Jr./Spring Lake Park, Minn./Spring Lake Park) paired with Brian Herlihy (So./Danbury, Conn./Immaculate) to beat the Oles' J.R. Simpach and Matt Petterson in the alternate shot format 1 up. The Knight duo lost the best-ball portion of the match 1 up and the scramble format 2-and-1, giving St. Olaf a 2-1 win in this match.

Aaron Buckley (Sr./San Diego, Calif./Francis Parker School) and Graeme Harten (Jr./Cincinnati, Ohio/The Seven Hills School) tied the Oles' Ryan Heide and Charlie Johnson in the alternate shot format for a half-point. St. Olaf won the best-ball section 3-and-2 and the scramble portion 2 up to earn a 2.5-0.5 point total.

Playing without sophomore Ned Rohrbach (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) and senior Jeff Berg  (Wood Dale, Ill./Wheaton Academy), the Knights nevertheless made a closer match of it than the score indicated. A bit of wildness off the tee and a couple of near misses on the green were the major factors in the Knights failure to close the gap.
