Knights Return to National Rankings at No. 23

October 27, 2009 at 1:36 pm

KANSAS CITY, Kan.—In the most recent NSCAA national rankings the Carleton men’s soccer team (14-3, 8-1 MIAC) is listed at No. 23. This is the first time since the preseason rankings, where the Knights debuted at No. 14, that the team has been listed among the nation’s top 25 squads. Carleton is the MIAC’s lone representative in the national rankings.

The return to the national rankings is the result of a 12 game winning streak. Not only is the team winning after a slow start, but dominating as well. After posting three more victories this week against Northwestern College (2-0), Ripon College (5-0), and Colorado College (3-1), the Knights have now outscored their opponents 33-2 during their 12 game winning streak.

The stingy defense has landed the Knights among the nation’s statistical leaders. Carleton now ranks No. 23 in the country in goals allowed average (0.57), No. 9 in save percentage (89%), and No. 6 in shutout percentage (71%). The Knights offense is 70th in the nation in goals per game (2.29) and has two players in the top 50 of assists per game. The crafty playmakers are sophomores Tim Wills (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic), who ranks ninth in the nation with 0.71 assists per game, and Ryan Cammarota (Neenah, Wisc.), who is tied for 41st with 0.53 assists per game.

In the NSCAA regional rankings the Knights remained at No.3 behind Loras College and Carroll University. Behind Carleton are fellow MIAC schools St. Olaf College (No. 5) and St. Thomas (No. 9).

The NCAA regional rankings, which come out Wednesday, October 28th, help determine the field for the national tournament. Carleton was No. 3 in the NCAA regional rankings last week.

The Knights continue play this week against St. Olaf in their last regular season game Saturday, October 31.
