NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Derek Funk’s (Sr./Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) first collegiate goal proved to be the game winner, but it was overshadowed by a seven-goal second-half as the Carleton College men’s soccer team posted an 8-0 triumph over visiting Cornell College. Rookie Branden McGarrity (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) put the game out of reach with three goals over a four-minute span shortly after intermission.

Carleton controlled possession in the first half, out-shooting the visitors 12-2. The lone goal came off of a header by Funk that was served in from a corner kick by Will Corcoran (Jr./Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi).

The second half was a different story, however, when lightning struck three times within four minutes. In the 55th minute, McGarrity received a cross-box pass from Simon Ginet (Jr./Arlington, Mass./Arlington) and slotted home his first collegiate goal. Only 80 seconds later, McGarrity collected a long pass from Sam Hayward (Fy./Stanford, Calif./Gunn) at the top of the box. McGarrity took a settling touch and buried the ball in the upper right corner. Ginet and McGarrity teamed up once more in the 59th minute, resulting in a header underneath the crossbar.

Suddenly the once close game was now 4-0.

Carleton added four additional goals on scoring strikes by Corcoran, Joey Pedtke (Jr./Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township), Shant Douzdjian (So./Portland, Ore./Riverdale), and senior Joseph Waite (Sr./Ottawa, Canada/Upper Canada College).

The Knights finished with a 30-2 advantage in shots and a 14-2 margin in corner kicks. A trio of goalkeepers combined on the shutout for the Knights.

McGarrity is the first Knight to record a hat trick since Bobby Phillips ’09 did so against Macalester on Sept. 12, 2007. The Knights had not scored eight goals against an opponent since Sept. 28, 1997, when they had an eight-goal game against the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

Carleton next travels to Waverly, Iowa on Monday, Sept. 3, to face Wartburg College at 2:00 p.m.
