ST. PETER, Minn. — The Carleton College men’s soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision at Gustavus Adolphus College in the MIAC opener for both squads. Stephen Johnson (Jr./Edina, Minn./Edina) tallied his first collegiate goal to account for Carleton’s score.
The contest pitted the 2013 MIAC regular-season champs—Gustavus—against the winners of the 2013 MIAC Playoffs—Carleton.
Several of the final stats favored Carleton as the Knights out-shot their hosts, 16-14, and owned a slight advantage in both shots on goal, 7-6, and corner kicks, 4-3. However, Gustavus was better able to cash in on its opportunities, tallying a trio of first-half goals to take control of the contest.
Patrick Leach finished a header in the 11th minute. Then Ryan Tollefsrud and Zack Brown scored five minutes apart later in the half.
In the 89th minute, Johnson tucked a volley into the upper corner, allowing Carleton to avoid the shutout.
Carleton will regroup and travel to Winona, Minn., where the Knights will face Saint Mary’s University on Saturday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m.
