Knights Drop OT Heartbreaker to No. 19 Luther, 2-1

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Jordy Cammarota (Sr./Neenah, Wis./Neenah) came up big with his third goal in the last two matches, but a victory wasn’t in the cards as the Carleton College men’s soccer team dropped a hotly contested match at home to the national No. 19 Luther College, 2-1 in overtime.

Luther (7-0) went ahead in the 12th minute, when Lucas Beato perfectly placed a free kick over the Carleton wall into the upper left corner of the net.

Carleton (3-5, 1-1 MIAC) appeared to equalize in the 32nd minute, when a Branden McGarrity (Jr./Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) had a deflected shot sail up in the air and be finished into the top shelf of the net by Stephen Johnson (Jr./Edina, Minn./Edina) on a back-post run from the middle of a crowd, but the assistant referee raised his flag for offside, disallowing the goal.

The Knights found the net in the 57th minute, when Stephen Baisch (Fy./Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) sent in a low cross to McGarrity, who was arriving inside the penalty area. McGarrity was in traffic, so he drew the keeper towards the left side of the net and laid the ball off to the right, where Cammarota smashed it over the goal line for the equalizing tally.

Luther secured victory in the 96th minute, as a long throw in was flicked in by Josh Parris.

Carleton next plays against Bethel University on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Bell Field, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. Live stats and video will be available via Knights Online.
