Jordan Cammarota Does It Again as Knights Top Johnnies in OT

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. — For the second time in eight days and the third time this season, senior Jordan Cammarota (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) delivered the game-winning overtime goal for the Carleton College men’s soccer team. This time, his 94th-minute free-kick goal accounted for all the scoring in the Knights’ 1-0 victory at Saint John’s.

“The entire group performed with grit and heart today,” said Carleton head coach Bob Carlson. “We needed a very good performance to stay with a very good Saint John's team.

“What can I say about Jordy in OT? He’s simply remarkable. That was clutch and clinical in earning the team three vital points on the road.”

After Sam Hayward (Jr./Stanford, Calif./Gunn) was fouled just outside the penalty area, Camamrota lined up a shot from 23 yards. His right-footed strike bent around the five-person wall and tucked inside the right post.

It was his team-best sixth goal of the season. Cammarota has now figured in Carleton’s last seven goals with five scores and two assists over the last four matches.

Taking advantage of a stiff wind at it’s back Saint John’s out-shot Carleton 9-3 in the second half, but Carleton keeper Keenan Smith (Sr./Madison, Wis./West) registered four impressive saves during the half en route to posting his third shutout of the year. Overall, the Johnnies possessed a 14-10 advantage in shots, but only a 5-4 margin in shots on goal.

Saturday's game was a re-match of the 2013 MIAC Playoffs Final that Carleton won 2-1. With Saturday's triumph, the Knights are now 8-1-1 in their last 10 meetings with the Johnnies.

The victory moves Carleton into a four-way tie for third place in the MIAC standings. The Knights will host Augsburg College on Saturday, Oct. 11. Live video of the 1 p.m. match will be available via Knights Online. The varsity match will be followed by the annual alumni game at 3 p.m.
