NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- The Knights out-shot the opposition and nearly found the net multiple times, but the Carleton College men's soccer team was unable to score in a tightly contested loss to the visiting College of St. Scholastica.
Carleton (2-3) played aggressively right out of the gate but had difficulties breaking through the Saints’ defense.
St. Scholastica (3-1) took the lead in the 27th minute, when Andrew Jenkins missed a header but finished off the rebound into the left side of the net.
The Knights nearly pulled level 10 minutes later, when Devin Tomson-Moylan (Sr./Saint Paul, Minn./Central) collected a cross in the penalty area and sent a rocket shot toward the side of the net, only to be thwarted by Jacob Ballheimer.
In the second half, Carleton outshot the Saints by a 6-5 margin but were again unable to convert. For the second time in less than a week, Will Schifeling (Sr./Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) had a sure goal cleared off the line by a defender. This time it came in the 69th minute.
St. Scholastica’s Shawayne Folkes put in an insurance goal in the 85th minute, sneaking the ball near post on a deflection.
Carleton next plays on the road in St. Peter, Minn. in their conference opener against 2013 MIAC regular season title holder Gustavus Adolphus College. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
