MINNEAPOLIS -- The Carleton College men’s soccer team out-shot host Augsburg College by a 20-7 margin, but it did not matter as the Auggies (3-3, 2-0 MIAC) tallied the game’s lone goal in the 36th minute.
Twice it appeared that the Knights (3-3-1, 0-1 MIAC) would secure the early lead. In the seventh minute, Sam Hayward (Sr./Stanford, Calif./Gunn) struck the post with his shot. Three minutes later, Danny Leal’s (Jr./Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake) strike seemed destined to be a goal until an Auggie defender bailed out goalkeeper Tommy Molski and cleared the ball away late.
The home team finally broke the scoring deadlock when Ben Henry scored following a corner kick. Carleton totaled a 14-1 difference in shots taken during the remainder of the contest but could not locate the equalizer.
The Knights play four of their next five games at home. Carleton opens the stretch by hosting Wartburg College in a non-conference game at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 23.
