Knights Extend Win Streak With 1-0 Win at Hamline

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Danny Leal’s (Jr./Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake) team-best sixth goal of the season accounted for all the scoring as the Carleton College men’s soccer team secured a 1-0 victory at Hamline University.

The win was Carleton’s (7-4-2 overall, 4-1-1 MIAC) fourth straight and—coupled with other results around the conference—moved the Knights into third place in the MIAC standings. Only four league games remain in the regular season.

Wednesday’s game opened as a defensive struggle with each side being credited with only two shot attempts in the first half. Carleton came out firing after intermission, taking the first four shots of the second half.

In the 72nd minute, Reed Cammarota (Sr./Vero Beach, Fla./Neenah) brought the ball up the middle of the field and passed to the left wing where Riley Phelps (Jr./Bowling Green, Ky./Bowling Green) made a move around a defender and was tripped in the penalty area.

The foul was called, and Leal was chosen to take the crucial penalty kick, which he buried providing the winning tally.

Carleton goalkeeper Brandon Hilliard (So./Anoka, Minn./Totino Grace) made that goal stand up as he registered six saves—five of them in the second half—to notch his third consecutive clean sheet. His six shutouts this season lead the MIAC.

Carleton hosts undefeated and second-place Macalester College on Saturday, Oct. 17. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m., and Knights Online will provide live video/stats of the match.
