Northfield, Minn. – The Carleton College men's soccer had its chances, but an own goal in the 12th minute and a late 90th minute goal propelled defending conference champion Gustavus Adolphus College past the Knights, 2-0, in the MIAC opener for both squads
The Gusties (4-0-1, 1-0-0 MIAC), who advanced to the national title game a season ago, took the lead 12 minutes into the game on a corner kick that was put into the back of the net by a Carleton player.
The Knights didn't panic, though, and generated a numbe of good chances through the remainder of the period, most notably Brian Ten Hoor's (So./Eden Prairie, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) shot that hit the cross bar in the 37th minute.
The Knights came out even more aggressively in the second 45 minutes, putting four of their six shots on net. They couldn't break through against the Gusties Tyler Garry, though, and the Gusties scored a late insurance goal in the 90th minute when the Knights were pushing forward, looking for the equalizer.
Ross Mattson (Sr./St. Paul, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) made seven saves in net for the Knights (2-3-0, 0-1-0 MIAC).
The Knights have a key conference road match at St. Mary's University on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 1 p.m.
