Adelman's wonder strike lifts Knights on Homecoming

Northfield, Minn. - Brett Adelman (Fy./Westminster, Colo./Legacy) scored a 35-yard golden goal to lift Carleton to a 3-2 overtime win over Bethel. With the game tied at 2-2 in the 2nd minute of the first overtime period, Adelman collected the ball 35 yards from goal, took a touch, and blasted a shot that dipped off of the underside of the crossbar.

The dramatic win came during Homecoming weekend at Carleton, and broke a two-game MIAC losing streak for the Knights.

Ross Martin (Sr./Norwalk, Conn.) and Brian TenHoor (So./Eden Prairie, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) scored for the Knights in regulation, while Matt Duer and Ryan VanderVeen scored for the Royals.

Carleton (7-5-2, 2-3-2 MIAC) dominated the match, outshooting the Royals 27-8. Bethel (3-10-1, 1-6-0 MIAC), however, converted their two best chances of the match to push the Knights to overtime.

While Adelman's goal will be the talk of the match, Carleton's two earlier goals were also of the highest quality.

The Knights took the lead in the fifth minute, as Peter Grassman (Jr./Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) drove a cross into the box, and Martin lept up and headed the ball past Bethel goalkeeper Nick Kantor.

Bethel equalized 15 minutes later, as Duer capitalized on a deflection in the box by slotted the ball home into an open net. The match was tied 1-1 at halftime.

Carleton started the second half just as they did the first, by dominating possession and scoring an early goal. This time, it was TenHoor who combined with his fellow sophomore Bobby Phillips (So./Vadnais Heights, Minn./Mounds View) for a fantastic goal in the 54th minute.

TenHoor collected the ball at midfield, played it wide to Phillips, who ran onto the ball, carried it towards the top of the box, then cut inside and threaded a pass between three Bethel defenders to an overlapping TenHoor, who ran onto the ball and buried it into the back of the net from eight yards out.

VanderVeen scored from the penalty spot in the 69th minute to send the match into overtime, which set the stage for Adelman's heroics.

Carleton's next match will be tomorrow, as they host Finlandia University at 12 noon at Bell Field.
