NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Brett Adelman (Sr./Westminster, Colo./Legacy) and Tim Wills (So./Portland, Ore./Central Catholic) each scored two goals, and junior Wes Elfman (Madison, Wis./Edgewood) added one of his own as the Carleton men’s soccer team (3-3-0, 2-1-0 MIAC) cruised to a 5-0 triumph over visiting Saint Mary’s University (2-3-0, 0-2-0 MIAC) at Bell Field.
The Knights showed their superiority immediately, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the game’s first 20 minutes. Elfman got the party started at 3:23 with his third goal of the season as he put home a rebound shot off a Wills assist. Just two and a half minutes later the pair switched roles as Wills headed Elfman’s cross on goal and put the rebound away.
Carleton furthered its advantage at 18:45 when Wills and Elfman assisted Adelman, who drove home a shot from the top of the box into the top right corner.
The Knights continued their attack, firing ten shots in the first half to the Cardinals’ three.
Carleton iced the cake in the second period as Wills scored again at the 60th minute on a Ryan Cammarota (So./Neenah, Wis.) assist, tapping home the rebound off a shot from the left side. Seven minutes later, Adelman got back in the books with his second goal of the game and the season. Miles Silbert (So./St. Louis Park, Minn.) tallied the assist on a ball played from the touchline to the top of the box, which Adleman hammered into the top right corner.
The Knights dominated possession throughout, finishing with a 16-5 advantage in shots.
After making one save in the first half, goalkeeper Pete Semmer (Jr./Del Mar, Calif./Bishop’s School) was relieved of his duties for the second period as Jerry McIntyre (Broomfield, Colo./Fairview) entered and added a save of his own during the second 45.
The lopsided affair proved to be an opportunity for many Knights to see playing time, as Chris Wilen, Sam McKay (Jr./Burnsville, N.C./Mountain Heritage), and McIntyre each logged their first varsity minutes of the season.
The celebration will be short-lived, though, as Carleton heads to Decorah, Iowa on Sunday, Sept. 20 for a 2 p.m. matchup with Luther College.
