DECORAH, Iowa – After a scoreless first half, the Carleton College men’s soccer team (4-3-0) found the back of the net twice after intermission to post a 2-0 non-conference victory over Luther College. Jerry McIntyre (Jr./Broomfield, Colo./Fairview) made his first start of the season in goal for the Knights and finished with six saves to preserve the shutout.
Carleton has now won four of its last five contests, outscoring opponents 11-2 over that stretch.
Sophomore Tim Wills (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic) got Carleton on the scoreboard in the 63rd minute. He deposited a header into the upper right corner of the net off a cross by junior Wes Elfman (Madison, Wis./Edgewood). It was Wills’ fourth goal of the year and third in the last two days. Over that same span Elfman has contributed three assists to go along with a score of his own.
The other Carleton goal came from rookie Taylor Ward (Springboro, Ohio) in the 84th minute when he drove a rebound off the post.
Luther (2-4-1) held a decided advantage in shot attempts, finishing with 21 tries to only six for the Knights. Only six of the Norse shots were on goal, however, and McIntyre has not yielded a goal in any of his six collegiate contests.
“Luther played really well, and they had a lot of good chances,” said Carleton head coach Bob Carlson. “Fortunately Jerry McIntyre came up big for us, and the defense played very well today.
“Tim Wills turned in a spectacular good game. He had a well-deserved goal, and he did a lot of work for us both defensively and on the attack.”
The Knights will host a trio of conference games over the next two weeks. First up is a visit from Hamline University on Sat., September 26 at 1:00 p.m. Knights Online will once feature a video webcast of that match.
