NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- In a rematch on last year's NCAA second-round game, Carleton College used a late goal by Ryan Cammarota (So./Neenah, Wis.) to defeat non-conference opponent the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, 1-0, at Bell Field. It was the Knights’ seventh straight triumph. During this stretch, Carleton has outscored its opponents by a 20-1 margin.
After numerous chances in the second half, the Knights (9-3-0, 6-1-0 MIAC) finally found the back of the net in the 85th minute on a beautiful give-and-go in the box between Cammarota and Tim Wills (So./Portland, Ore./Central Catholic). It was Cammarota's first goal of the season, and Wills' team-leading ninth assist.
In his second start of the year, Jerry McIntyre (Jr./Broomfield, Colo./Fairview) recorded six saves for the Knights in goal. It was McIntyre's second shutout in as many attempts, proving Carleton's depth at the goalkeeper position as starter Pete Semmer received the day off.
On a cold day, both teams played very physically, with a total of 29 fouls and five yellow cards handed out, including one to fiery Carleton assistant coach Josh Petty and another to the Platteville bench.
Though the Pioneers ended with an 11-8 advantage in shots, the Knights dominated possession in the second half and ultimately found the winner.
It was the third time Carleton has topped UW-Plateville by a 1-0 score, and each time Cammarota has been a factor in the goal. He tallied the lone score in the 2008 regular season meeting in Platteville, then assisted on Wes Elfman’s winner in the NCAA second-round game last November.
The 2009 Knights, sit alone atop the MIAC standings, return to conference action with a 4:00 p.m. contest on Wednesday at the University of St. Thomas, which blanked No. 16 St. Olaf on Friday.
