Tim Wills Tallies Game Winner in Overtime

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – A beautiful combination play by sophomores Ryan Cammarota (Neenah, Wis.) and Tim Wills (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic) allowed the Carleton College men’s soccer team to record a 1-0 overtime victory over visiting Carthage College. Wills corralled a rebound ball in the box and scored 57 seconds into the bonus period.

Carleton (2-2) did a solid job building possession in the first half but was unable to get on the scoreboard as Taao Scarnato made six saves.

In the second half, the Red Men (1-2-3) was better able to control play and created a couple of solid scoring changes. Carleton keeper Pete Semmer (Jr./Del Mar, Calif./Bishop’s School) finished the day with five saves, none more spectacular than his leaping rejection of Tyler Cortez’s shot in the 69th minute.

On its second possession of the overtime, Carleton was able to break through. Cammarota picked up a loose ball, dribbled around two defenders and headed toward the middle of the box. He found Wills, who flicked the ball back to Cammarota for a one-timer, which was blocked by a sliding defender.

Scarnato had also positioned himself for a stop of Cammarota’s shot, allowing Wills—the Knights leading scorer in 2008—to scoop up the loose ball and comfortably deposit it into the net for his first goal of the season.

Carleton next hosts the MIAC pre-season favorite Gustavus Adolphus at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16. Knight Online will feature a live webcast of the contest.
