COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— Overcoming blustery conditions in Colorado Springs, the Carleton men’s soccer team (13-3, 8-1 MIAC) scored early and often in wining its 11th consecutive match. Following the 5-0 win over Ripon College (Wis.), the Knights have outscored opponents by an astronomical 30-to-1 margin during the win streak. Ryan Cammarota (So./Neenah, Wis.) sparked the potent attack by tallying a goal and two assists.
“The was a total team effort,” said Carleton head coach Bob Carlson. “The bench played some important minutes for us today and gave us a big lift. All 19 guys contributed and helped us win.”
The fans in attendance had barely found their seats by the time the Knights got the game-winning goal. Playing in front of home-state fans, senior Brett Adelman (Westminster, Colo./Legacy) opened the scoring in the third minute of the contest with his fourth goal of the season. He beat his defender one-on-one on the outside, then dribbled past the keeper and passed the ball into the net.
In the 25th minute, Cammarota and forward Tim Wills (So./Portland, Ore./Central Catholic) worked a beautiful combination play which Wills slotted into the side netting for his seventh goal of the campaign.
Playing with the wind at their back in the second half, it didn’t take long for the Knights to pad their lead. In the 50th minute Cammarota got in one-on-one with the keeper and scored one of his own after assisting on the previous two goals.
Miles Silbert (So./St. Louis Park, Minn.) match Wills for the team lead in goals as he took a shot from distance and curled it into the upper corner. Silbert then assisted on Ryan Hafner’s (So./Eden Prairie/Benilde- St. Margaret's) first collegiate goal in the 89th minute.
Jerry McIntyre (Jr./Broomfield, Colo./Fairview) stopped six Ripon shots for his fourth shutout of the season in as many tries. He made five of his saves in the first half when Ripon was going with the wind. The Red Hawks attempted a couple of long-range shots, one of which he tipped over the bar to keep the shutout intact. It was the Knights eighth consecutive shutout as a team, and the defense has yielded only a lone goal over the last 1061:47.
The Knights, who didn’t arrive until about 1:30 a.m. on Saturday will conclude their brief visit to Colorado when they play a 2 p.m. CDT match against host Colorado College on Sunday, Oct. 24.
