ST. PAUL, Minn. – Will Corcoran (Jr./Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi) converted an early penalty kick opportunity and Branden McGarrity (Fy./Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) added another goal as the Carleton College men’s soccer team secured a 2-1 road victory at Macalester College. This was the Knights’ (8-1, 2-1 MIAC) fourth consecutive triumph.
In the 13th minute, a foul in the box gave Corcoran the opportunity to line up his uncontested shot from 12 yards out. Macalester goalkeeper Jesse Yourish guessed one direction, but the Carleton midfielder went the opposite way and deposited the ball into a wide open net for his 11th career goal and fifth of the campaign.
McGarrity created his scoring chance in the 21st minute. He collected a loose ball at the top of the box and made goal out of nothing. He brought the ball back and took a snap shot between two defenders, burying the ball into the left side of the goal before the goalkeeper could move. It was McGarrity’s 12th score of the season, the fourth-highest single-season total in program history.
The Scots got a goal back five minutes later when a deflected shot fell right at the feet of Will Mackaman, who snuck the ball into the upper corner. That would be the end of the scoring even though the teams combined for 22 more shots.
James Neher (Jr./Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi) notched four saves in goal for the Knights who travel to conference leader Gustavus Adolphus College for a 1p.m. contest this Saturday, Sept. 29.
