Knights Stay Hot, Hand Gusties First MIAC Loss

ST. PETER, Minn. – Senior Alex Voorhees (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) scored a long-range goal late in the first half as the Carleton College men’s soccer team handed conference co-leader Gustavus Adolphus College it’s first MIAC setback by a 3-0 score.

This was the fifth straight win overall for No. 22 Carleton (9-1, 3-1 MIAC), which moved into a tie for third place in the conference. The Knights have now outscored their opponents 35-8 on the season. The loss snapped the Gusties (7-2-1, 3-1-1 MIAC) eight-match unbeaten-streak.

The game winner came in the 39th minute. Will Schifeling (So./Eau Claire, Wis./Regis) played the ball back to Voorhees about 25 yards out.  The senior took a touch to beat a defender and then unleashed a laser into the top corner.

While the Gusties had an advantage in possession time, the Knights were effective on the counter attack.

In the 75th minute, Will Corcoran (Jr./Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi) sprung Branden McGarrity (Fy./Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) on the left side, where the rookie beat his defender. He crossed the ball to the left where Derek Funk (Sr./Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) served it into the box, and Schifeling headed the ball toward the goal. The shot was deflected, and Schifeling pounced on the deflection, heading it home for his second career goal.

In the 86th minute, McGarrity sealed the win with his 13th goal of the season. Simon Ginet (Jr./Arlington, Mass./Arlington) pressured and stripped the ball from a Gustie defender creating a 2-on-1 opportunity. Ginet fed McGarrity who finished off the game by slotting the ball inside the near post.

For Ginet it was his team-best sixth assist on the season. The score also tied McGarrity with Mario Small  (in 1967) and George Monyemangene (in 1987) for second place on Carleton’s single-season goal list, two behind Ron Sanders’ team record established in 1963.

Neil Bartholomay (Jr./St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) once again provided steady play along the backline, while outside defender Trent Elmore (Fy./Bloomington, Ind./Phillips Exeter Academy) and goalkeeper Keenan Smith (So./Madison, Wis./West) contributed to the shutout in relief of a pair of injured teammates.

Carleton has a pair of tough home matches next weekend. First the Knights host Augsburg College for a 1 p.m. contest on Saturday, Oct. 6. The next afternoon, the College of St. Scholastica visits Bell Field. Live video of both contests will be available on Knights Online.
