NORTHFIELD, Minn. — Sophomore Peter Passalino (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) made sure that the five seniors on the Carleton College men’s soccer team would not be participating in their final home game. His first goal of the year came in the 84th minute and gave the Knights a 3-2 victory over crosstown rival St. Olaf College.

The result earned the Knights (9-6-2, 7-2-1 MIAC) a share of second place in the MIAC standings, while also handing the Oles (12-4-2, 7-1-2 MIAC) their first conference defeat. The victory also secured a first-round home game for Carleton in next week’s MIAC Playoffs.

The Oles scored first as Jens Undlin, the conference’s leading goal scored, tallied his 14th of the season by finishing off a cross from Phumelala Sukati at the 14:54 mark of the first half.

KC Onuoha-Onyekuru (So./The Woodlands, Texas/The John Cooper School) picked a prime time for his first collegiate goal, scoring right before halftime. With 40 seconds before intermission, he tucked a shot just inside the near post following header assists from Branden McGarrity (Jr./Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) and Devin Tomson-Moylan (Sr./St. Paul, Minn./Central).

Carleton grabbed its initial lead as Jordy Cammarota (Sr./Neenah, Wis./Neenah) notched his ninth goal of the season in the 62nd minute. After a long service by Riley Phelps (So./Bowling Green, Ky./Bowling Green), Cammarota’s left-footed attempt was blocked by a defender, but he corralled the rebound and fired home a right-footed shot from 17-yards.

Carleton continued to press the attack, out-shooting the conference leaders in each period and finishing with an overall 11-4 advantage.

The Oles knotted the score in the 71st minute when a penalty kick was awarded after Amadou Gueye was fouled just inside the 18-yard box. Kevin Scrip converted the penalty shot, placing it inside the right post to knot the score.

With the match level, the game-winning score came from Passalino in the latter stages of regulation. He initially tried to spring McGarrity with a rolling pass through the Ole defense, but St. Olaf goalkeeper Ben La Cam came way off his line and disrupted the play with a sliding deflection. The ball ended up at the feet of the hard-charging Passalino, who calmly fired into the now open net, giving the Knights the 3-2 triumph.

Carleton will host University of St. Thomas in the MIAC Playoffs Quarterfinals on Tuesday, Nov. 4 at 11:30 a.m. Saint John’s hosts Macalester in the other quarterfinal matchup. After receiving the first-round bye via tiebreaker, Gustavus Adolphus will host the Carleton-St. Thomas winner in the semifinals on Wednesday. Meanwhile St. Olaf will await the winner of the other quarterfinal match between Macalester and Saint John’s.

Knights Online will provide live video and stats of all home postseason matches.
