MANKATO, Minn. – Juniors Will Corcoran (Mahtomedi, Minn./Mahtomedi) and Simon Ginet (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) each notched two goals to guide the Carleton College men’s soccer team to a decisive 5-0 road victory over Bethany Lutheran College.
The Knights (4-0-0) wasted no time getting things going in the first half. In the sixth minute, Branden McGarrity (Fy./Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) brought the ball along the end line and sent it in front where Ginet smashed it home to give Carleton an early lead.
Only 12 minutes later, McGarrity was fouled inside the Bethany Lutheran (1-3-0) 18-yard box. Corcoran capitalized on the opportunity, slotting home the penalty kick into the lower right corner and extending the Knights’ lead.
Ginet’s second score of the contest came in the 40th minute. Shant Douzdjian (So./Portland, Ore./Riverdale) provided the assist when his rocket shot was blocked and Ginet drove home the rebound, allowing Carleton to carry a 3-0 lead into intermission.
Less than five minutes into the second half, Corcoran struck again. Ginet sent a cross to the far post and Corcoran completed the play with a diving header.
The finishing touch was put into the net by rookie Tom Felton (Appleton, Wis./Appleton West) who scored his first goal of the season when he chipped a shot over the Vikings’ goalkeeper.
Carleton’s defense kept Bethany Lutheran from finding its rhythm on offensive. The hosts were outshot 24-2 over the course of 90 minutes. Sophomore Keenan Smith (Madison, Wis./West) got the start in goal for the Knights and registered the clean sheet.
