WAVERLY, Iowa — Junior Branden McGarrity (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) tied the Carleton College men’s soccer career goals record with a stylish second-half tally that earned the Knights a 1-1 draw on the home field of No. 15 Wartburg College.

Wartburg (10-2-4) entered the non-conference match undefeated over its previous eight matches. Carleton (6-6-2) meanwhile played in its sixth overtime game of the year.

“The guys played well against a really strong Wartburg team,” said Carleton head coach Bob Carlson. “Wartburg created some good chances, especially in the first half. They are an electric team with some really, really good players. We withstood that and re-grouped at halftime. We came out with one of our stronger second halves of the season and moved the ball effectively.”

Wartburg drew first blood in the 27th minute after Paris Martins ran onto a through ball and scored his fifth goal of the year.

Carleton out-shot the hosts in the second half, and in the 51st minute, McGarrity leveled the score.

Pressure from Jordy Cammarota (Sr./Neenah, Wis./Neenah) resulted in a deflected clearance that McGarrity collected on the right wing. The junior forward dribbled around a defender a carried the ball toward the top of the 18-yard box. Two more Wartburg players closed in on the 2012 All-American, but McGarrity pushed the ball back to the right, splitting the defensive reinforcements. Now free from traffic, he slotted a 10-yard shot across the goal and inside the left post.

It was McGarrity’s fifth tally of the season and his 35th career goal, tying the mark established by Tim Wills ’12 during the 2008-11 campaigns. (SEE CHART BELOW)

Keenan Smith (Sr./Madison, Wis./West) registered 10 saves in for Carleton, including four in the second overtime and one in the final seconds of the match.

Wartburg was credited with 17 shots in the match versus 11 for Carleton.

“We set the bar for ourselves today,” said Carlson, “and we will need to be that good in our next match against Concordia.”

Carleton returns to MIAC play on Saturday, Oct. 25 as the Knights host Concordia College for a 1 p.m. match. Live video/stats will be available via Knights Online.
