NORTHFIELD, Minn. — On a steamy September afternoon with the temperature approaching 90 degrees, the Carleton College men’s soccer team finished with a 17-15 edge in shots but was unable to find the back of the net and lost its home opener against UW-Whitewater by a 2-0 margin.
The Warhwaks (3-0) continued their hot start to the season with a goal in the sixth minute. Dylan Hottsmith headed a ball across the six-yard box and Sam Novak headed home the volley for his first goal of the season.
The Knights’ (0-2) hunt for the equalizer saw them out-shoot the visitors in both halves, but UW-Whitewater essentially sealed the contest with a rebound goal in the 80th minute.
Senior John Fox (Duluth, Minn./Marshall) tallied a game-high six shots to pace the hosts.
Carleton goalkeeper Brandon Hilliard (So./Anoka, Minn./Totino Grace) registered a career-best seven saves. Alex Buchanon stopped four shots for UWW.
The Knights will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 5 when they host Crown College for a 3:30 p.m. match. Live video of that contest will be available via Knights Online.
