Knights and Scots Settle for Scoreless Draw

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Senior Keenan Smith (Madison, Wis./West) registered a career-high eight saves—including dramatic, sprawling stop in the 88th minute—as the Carleton College and Macalester College men’s soccer teams played to a 0-0 draw.

The result gave the Knights (6-5-1, 4-1-1 MIAC) another point in the standings, moving Carleton into a tie with Gustavus Adolphus for second place on the conference table with only four MIAC matches remaining. Tonight proved to be the Knights’ fifth overtime match of the season and fourth in the last five games. Macalester (7-5-2, 3-3-1 MIAC), meanwhile, moved into a tie for fourth place.

Smith withstood an early barrage from the Scots, who registered the first five shots of the contest. Things evened out, though, with the Knights taking 13 of the next 20 shots.

The play of the match came with two minutes remaining in regulation.

A Macalester free kick from the far left wing was headed forward by Austin Burrows. Smith made a highlight reel stop with a leaping grab to his left to keep the ball out of the net.

The Scots finished with a slight edge in shot attempts, 19-16.

The Knights will travel to Hamline University on Saturday, Oct. 18 for an 11 a.m. match. Links to live video and stats will be available via Knights Online.
