NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- In a hard-fought match, the Carleton College men’s soccer team earned a 1-1 double-overtime draw against national No. 20 Saint John’s University. After surrendering a very early score, the Knights notched the equalizer on Peter Passalino’s (Jr./Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) first goal of the season. Neither team could break the deadlock, even though Carleton finished with a 21-8 advantage in shots taken.
The Johnnies (6-1-2, 2-0-1 MIAC) struck early, as Sam Newman found the back of the net for his third goal of the season barely a minute into the contest. Newman collected a feed on the right side and dribbled free for a shot inside the left post.
Carleton (3-4-2, 0-1-1 MIAC) returned the favor in the 20th minute. Riley Phelps (Jr./Bowling Green, Ky./Bowling Green) headed a 50-50 ball toward the goal and Passalino beat his defender to the loose ball, tucking a shot inside the right post.
Carleton possessed a 13-2 edge in shots taken during the second half but was unable to add to its tally and the game extended into overtime. After the extra 20 minutes were played without another goal, the teams settled for the 1-1 draw.
Branden McGarrity (Sr./Glenview, Ill/Glenbrook South) making his season debut left a strong impression to home spectators, tying for a game-high four shots taken. Early in the second half, he fired a shot from 30 yards out, forcing the Johnnies’ Kevin Lebahn to make an athletic save in the upper corner.
The Knights’ next match will be at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 29 as Carleton travels to Bethel University. A link to live video/stats will be available via Knights Online.
