NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- Sam Hayward (Sr./Stanford, Calif./Gunn) scored an early goal to set the tone and Branden McGarrity (Sr./Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South) add two scores of his own as the Carleton College men’s soccer team went on the road and played rival St. Olaf College to a 3-3 draw.
Today’s result pushed Carleton (7-5-4, 4-2-2 MIAC) into sole possession of fourth place in the conference standings with only two games remaining in the regular season.
Hayward scored only 74 seconds into the match, tucking a rocket from 27 yards out inside the left post for his third goal of the season.
In the 17th minute, Sam Kaplan converted a 20-yard free kick, getting St. Olaf (9-6-1, 5-2-1 MIAC) on the scoreboard. However, three minutes later, McGarrity found the back of the net curling a 25-yard free kick around a six-man wall to push Carleton (7-5-4, 4-2-2 MIAC) back in front.
The Oles knotted things backup in the 36th minute when Henrik Kowalkowski scored with a low-angle shot from the left wing.
Just as they had done in the first half, the Knights scored very early in the second period. McGarrity notched his second goal of the contest only 22 seconds into the stanza, eluding a defender and blasting a 20-yard shot inside the left post. This was his seventh career mutli-goal contest and gives him 40 during his historic career.
Carleton maintained the one-goal lead until the 70th minute when Jens Undlin cleaned up a rebound off the post following a corner kick.
The Knights had a couple of solid chances during the later stages of the second half and the overtime periods but were unable to break the deadlock.
The Knights pursuit of a postseason berth continues with their visit fifth-place University of St. Thomas on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 3:30 p.m. Carleton closes the regular season by hosting Saint Mary’s University on Saturday, Oct. 31.
