INDIANOLA, Iowa – Kohl Sparrman’s (So./Apple Valley, Minn./Rosemount) first goal of the season came at an opportune time as his 94th-minute tally lifted the Carleton College men’s soccer team to a come-from-behind, 2-1 victory at Simpson College.
The contest was scoreless until the 42nd minute when the Storm’s Donevan Roe scored following a deflected service toward the left post.
Although Simpson (2-1-0) seemed to control the early portions of the second half,
Danny Leal (Sr./Rice Lake, Wis./Rice Lake) changed the outlook of the evening when he put Carleton (2-1-1) on the scoreboard in the 56th minute.
He ran onto a pass from Riley Phelps (Sr./Bowling Green, Ky./Bowling Green) and carried the ball down the left sideline. About 25 yards from the endline, Leal cut inside and beat two defenders as he worked toward the top of the box at which point he struck a bending ball that tucked just inside the right post. It was Leal’s second goal of the season and the 11th of his career.
Carleton goalkeeper Brandon Hilliard (Jr./Anoka, Minn./Totino Grace) kept the momentum in the Knights’ favor when he made consecutive sprawling saves in the 62nd minute to keep the score knotted. Hilliard finished the contest with a season-best nine saves.
Phelps was credited with the assist on Sparrman’s golden goal, as the senior collected a pass out of the midfield and worked up the left side before sending a low cross into the box. Sparrman was able to re-direct the ball between the goalkeeper and the near post.
The Knights will next travel to Crown College for a 4 p.m. tilt on Tuesday, Sept. 13.
