WINONA, Minn. – The Carleton College men’s tennis team opened the MIAC portion of the schedule with a 7-2 triumph over host Saint Mary’s University. The Knights won two of three during doubles and five of the six singles matches.

Three first-years contributed to the victory, with two of them making their season debuts. Rookie Erik Johnson (Grand Forks, N.D./Red River) teamed with Nelson Wolf (Jr./Faibault, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's School) for an 8-2 win at third doubles. Richard Yeker (Fy./Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Adlai E Stevenson) made his first appearance for the Knights, prevailing 6-0, 6-2 in singles.

"Richard had a stellar debut at No. 6 singles today,” said Carleton head coach Stephan Zweifel. “His graceful moves and electrifying shot making made many of us finally forget the Beyonce Super Bowl halftime show."

Avery Rux (So./Austin, Texas/Home School) and first-year  Christian Nagy (Fairway, Kans./Pembroke Hill School) improved to 2-1 with an 8-3 victory at second doubles. Rux, Paul Cooper (Sr./Burr Ridge, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and Mauricio Gonzalez (So./La Paz, Bolivia/American Cooperative School) each won their singles matches in straight set.

Austin Jiang (Sr./Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) improved to 3-1 this season, but he had to work for it, prevailing 6-4, 1-6, and 10-4. "Austin had a torturous match today against an opponent who ran down every hard hit ball,” said Zweifel. “In fact, if I had a dollar for every clean winner that Austin was able to hit in that second set, I would have a dollar".

Carleton has two matches on the schedule for Saturday, Feb. 16. The day begins with a 12:00 p.m. match versus Luther College followed by a 3 p.m. tilt against University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
