Knights fall at regionally-ranked Luther

DECORAH, Iowa — The Carleton College men’s tennis team, ranked No. 17 in the central region, traveled to Luther College and faced the No. 15-ranked Norse. The Knights saw their four-game win streak in the series with an 8-1 setback. A bright spot for Carleton was the play of Patton McClelland (Fy./Rock Hill, SC./Charlotte Latin School), who was a winner at sixth singles.

Luther took control early, sweeping the three doubles matches and then prevailed in five of the six singles contests to cruise to the non-conference victory.

"Although our team has seen better outings, we also need give a lot of credit to the talented Luther squad,” said Carleton head coach Stephan Zweifel. “Today's outcome was reminiscent of the Blockbuster vs. NetFlix battle for the video market."

McClelland was able to overcome an early 3-0 deficit by taking 12 of the next 13 games, on his way to a 6-4, 6-0 win.

"Patton was a wonderful bright spot in today's contest,” Zweifel said. “Trying to stop his relentless style of play is as foolish as standing between an elephant and a peanut."

Andrew Hwang (Jr./Brookfield, Wis./University School) lost a very competitive second singles match by a 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 score. Mauricio Gonzalez (Jr./La Paz, Bolivia/American Cooperative School) captured the first set in his match 7-6 (7-3) before falling in three sets at fourth singles.

The road weary Knights are scheduled to play their first on-campus home match of the season on Friday, April 11 as Carleton will face MIAC foe Hamline University. The match will begin at 4:00 p.m. at the Bell Field Courts.
