Knights Shutout Cardinals in MIAC Opener

WINONA, Minn. – The Carleton College men’s tennis team notched a 9-0 victory over Saint Mary’s University in the MIAC opener for both squads.

“Although our new uniforms make us look like performers in a rave-themed circus,” said Carleton head coach Stephan Zweifel, “the guys were incredibly focused in both their doubles and singles matches today.”

The Knights (2-1 overall) handed the Cardinals (5-1 overall) their first setback of the season. Carleton got wins in both singles and doubles from Erik Johnson (So./Grand Forks, N.D./Red River), McCoy Becker (Sr./Ojai, Calif./Thacher School), Christian Nagy (So./Fairway, Kans./Pembroke Hill School), and Patton McClelland (Fy./Rock Hill, SC/Charlotte Latin School).

The Knights dropped a total of only four games in doubles before winning all six singles matches in straight sets.

Johnson and Becker combined on an 8-1 triumph at first doubles, then prevailed at first and fourth singles, respectively. Nagy and McClelland dropped two games in winning their No. 2 doubles match, 8-2, then each dropped only two games in posting victories at third and fifth singles.

Third doubles saw Richard Yeker (So./Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Adlai E Stevenson) and Nikita Fomichev (Fy./Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn South) team up for the first time. The duo registered an 8-1 win.

“I was a little worried in the warm ups that the duo of Yeker and Fomichev might play out as the old Russian saying, ‘Like shearing a pig – lots of noise but very little wool’, but we were all amazed with their synergy,” Zweifel said.

Carleton faces regionally-ranked Grinnell College on Sunday, Feb. 16 at the Owatonna, Minn.
