LAKEVILLE, Minn. – The win streak is now at six matches for the Carleton College men’s tennis team. The Knights improved to 7-1 on the season and 3-0 in conference action with an 8-1 triumph over Bethel University.
Alex Chin (Sr./Hingham, Mass./Hingham) continued his mastery with wins once again in both singles and doubles. He raised his doubles record to 5-0 this season after teaming with Austin Jiang (Sr./Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) for an 8-2 triumph at first doubles. Chin then posted a 6-0 and 6-0 decision at second singles, improving his solo ledger to 7-0 on the year.
“Having Alex back on the team after his year with the Dartmouth engineering program has been a pleasant surprise,” said Carleton head coach Stephan Zweifel, “somewhat like putting on your spring coat after a long winter and finding the other half of a Twix bar in the pocket”.
While Chin is playing the role of dominating veteran, a pair of rookies figured in three of today’s triumphs. Christian Nagy (Fy./Fairway, Kans./Pembroke Hill School) joined with Paul Cooper (Sr./Burr Ridge, Ill./Hinsdale Central) for an 8-6 win at second doubles. Nagy then went on his own and posted a 6-1, 6-2 result in singles. Richard Yeker (Fy./Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Adlai E Stevenson) also notched a singles triumph, prevailing by scores of 6-4 and 6-3.
“Richard had a tough match today,”Zweifel said. “But he was able to extract himself from more uncomfortable and compromising situations than former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi”.
The pairing of sophomores Paul Elbow (Madison, Wis./Madison East) and Ben Huang (Sammamish, Wash./Skyline) notched the other victory in doubles action by an 8-3 margin. Cooper and Mauricio Gonzalez (So./La Paz, Bolivia/American Cooperative School) also won their singles matches in straight sets.
The Knights put their win streak on the line when they battle St. Cloud State University, a NCAA Division II program on Sunday, March 3 at 2:00 p.m.
