NORTHFIELD, Minn. — The 2014 season drew to a close for the Carleton College men’s tennis team as the second-seeded Knights lost 5-2 to cross-town foe and third seed St. Olaf College in the semifinals of the MIAC Playoffs. The Knights fell behind during the doubles portion of the match and never caught up.
Andrew Hwang (Jr./Brookfield, Wis./University School) and Erik Johnson (So./Grand Forks, N.D./Red River) picked up an 8-6 victory at first doubles, but the Oles prevailed in the other two doubles matches by identical 8-5 results.
St. Olaf extended its lead to 3-1 with the victory at first singles by a 6-1, 6-3 tally. Carleton got that point back when Mauricio Gonzalez (Jr./La Paz, Bolivia/American Cooperative School) prevailed 6-3 and 6-1 at fourth singles. However, the Oles picked up straight set wins at the sixth slot and then second singles to close out the match.
Carleton wraps up the season with a 16-9 ledger, while St. Olaf improved to 10-5 and will face MIAC regular-season champion Gustavus Adolphus in the conference tournament championship on Sunday.
