St. Paul, Minn.

Result: W 9-0

Knights Blank Pipers

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Knights posted their third consecutive victory shutting out Hamline University, 9-0. All five of Carleton’s rookies saw action on Friday afternoon. One member of that group, Sam Megowen (Fy./Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle), prevailed in doubles play, then won his singles match in straight sets by scores of 6-2 and 6-2.

In fact all four of the first-year players that took the court in singles cruised to victories in the minimum required sets, dropping a combined 14 games.

Jordan Hughes (Sr./Wauwatosa, Wis./Marquette) and Austin Taylor (So./Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) both dropped the opening set of their singles matches by identical scores of 6-1 before rallying back to win third-set tiebreakers and seal the sweep.

“Jordan has the survival instincts of a coyote,” head coach Stephan Zweifel said. “He would have gnawed off a leg to escape with a win today.

“Although we are starting to resemble the book cover of Stephen Crane's Red Badge of Courage, the players rose to the challenge of battling another MIAC opponent.”

The Knights conclude the regular season with a doubleheader against Saint John’s University (12 p.m.) and Macalester College (3 p.m.) on Sunday, April 26.
