CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Carleton College men’s tennis team picked up its seventh consecutive victory with a second straight 7-2 triumph over a regionally-ranked program from Iowa. The Knights bested No. 17 Coe College and are now 7-1 against regionally-ranked competition this season.
Carleton jumped out to a 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles. Paul Cooper (Jr./Burr Ridge, Ill./Hinsdale Central) and Peter Dunn (Sr./Winnetka, Ill./North Shore Country Day) defeated the 11th-ranked tandem in the central region, 8-6. Jon Aranda (Sr./Los Angeles, Calif./Loyola) and Dan Vollman (Sr./Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park River Forest) prevailed, 9-8, in a tight second doubles contest, and Andrew Hwang (Fy./Brookfield, Wis./University School) and Austin Jiang (Jr./Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) had an easier time, posting an 8-2 win at the third spot.
The Kohawks picked up their two points by winning first and second singles, but the Knights depth was too much to overcome. Hwang, ranked No. 23 among singles players in the central region, recorded a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the third slot.
"Andrew's hustle and resolve makes Rafael Nadal look like Barney Fife," said Carleton head coach Stephan Zweifel.
Vollman (6-2, 6-1) and Cooper (6-0, 6-1) also notched straight-set wins. After winning the opening set, Jiang required a super tiebreaker to come out on top at fifth singles by a 6-1, 3-6, 10-6 score
Today’s victory comes on the heels of Saturday’s win over No. 12 Luther College by the same 7-2 margin.
"It was a productive trip to the Hawkeye State,” Zweifel said. “We played some great competition, and we stayed true to our motto ‘What happens in Iowa, eventually ends up on Jon Aranda's Facebook page.’"
Carleton, which has already secured a spot in the conference tournament, closes the regular-season with four MIAC matches over the next two weeks. First up is a get-together with cross-town rival St. Olaf College on Wednesday, April 18. Action at Bell Field begins at 4:00 p.m.
