NORTHFIELD, Minn — In its final tune up for the MIAC Championships, the Carleton College men’s track and field team competed at the Ole Open Qualifier, held across town at St. Olaf College. Even with some of the squad’s top runners taking a break before the conference meet, the Knights still saw strong showings up and down the roster.

Evan Howard (So./St. Petersberg, Fla./Home School) qualified for the finals in the 60-meter dash, taking seventh with a time of 7.27.

Colby Seyferth (Jr./Banks, Ore./Banks) notched the Knights’ first top-five performance with a 50.69 time in the 400-meter dash that was good for fourth place. Two events later, teammate Walter Edstrom (Fy./Plano, Texas/Plano West) also took fourth with a 1:58.18 in the 800-meter run.

Team successes continued in the 1000-meter run, which followed. Four Knights could be found among the top seven finishers. Jonah Barry (So./Madison, Wis./Madison West) placed third in 2:32.47. Shortly behind him were Ben Hiskes (So./Storrs, Conn./Loomis Chaffee), Marcus Huderle (Sr./Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie), and Michael Tolan (Sr./Saint Louis, Mo./John Burroughs) as they grabbed spots five, six, and seven.

Seyferth was the Knights’ top finisher in the 200-meter dash, notching a time of 23.07.

The Knights also put in a strong showing off the track. In the high jump, Peter Dehkes (Fy./Lebanon, N.J./North Hunterdon) took fourth with a distance of 1.85 meters. In the shot put, Brendan Fowl (Sr./Kingsville, Md.) threw for a respectable 12.85 meters. Jiatao Cheng (Jr./Gurnee, Ill./Warren) was a few spaces behind with a distance of 11.62 meters. Cheng also took part in the weight throw, in which he took 13th with a distance of 13.19 meters.

Next weekend, they will travel to Collegeville to compete in the three-day MIAC championships co-hosted by College of Saint Benedict and Saint John’s University.
