NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- The Knights placed fourth out of 13 teams at the Carleton Relays held Saturday at Laird Stadium. Jack Delehanty (Sr./Madison, Wis./Monona Grove) led wire-to-wire as he picked up the victory in the 800-meter run, edging teammate Michael Sanders (Jr./Cedar Falls, Iowa) to record one of the team’s two event victories on the day.
Nick Cesarek (Sr./Eagan, Minn./Eastview) finished third in the 100-meter dash, recording a time of 11.07 and placed fourth in the 200-meter sprint, finishing at 22.40. Both times were personal bests. He also ran the leadoff leg of the third-place 4x400-meter relay.
In the javelin throw, John Hanks (Sr./LeRoy, Minn./LeRoy-Ostrander) and Cesarek placed second and third respectively, while Robert Wakeley (Fy./Kenmore, Wash./Northwest) had a collegiate personal record in winning his flight.
Other top storylines in the field events include Evan Franco (Jr./Austin, Texas/James Bowie) clearing an outdoor career-best 4.30 meters (14 feet, 1.25 inches) in the pole vault to place second. In the high jump, senior Nick Smith (Houston, Texas/St. Thomas) tied for eighth place in his first endeavor in the event.
The track portion of the team had its share of highlights as well.
Chris Marshall (Jr./Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) crossed the line fourth in the 5K race as he trimmed nearly 15 seconds off his previous season best to establish a new personal standard.
Colin Sinclair (So./Madison, Wis./West) placed sixth in the 10K run, ahead of fellow distance racers Eric Hofmann (Sr./Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) and Peter Samuels (Sr./Concord, N.H.) who placed eighth and tenth respectively.
Tom Ballinger (Sr./Wenatchee, Wash.), Ty Martin (So./Minot, N.D.), and Dylan Bothun So./Rosemount, Minn.) grabbed fourth through sixth places in the 110-meter hurdles. Ballinger cruised to the victory in the 400-meter hurdles, once again posting a NCAA provisional qualifying time.
John Davis (So./Eden Prairie, Minn.) earned fifth place in his first steeplechase run of the season as he posted a time of 10:04.60. He had been recovering from a surfing injury.
Other personal records were established by Kian Flynn (Fy./Otis, Ore./Taft) in the 1500-meter run and Steve Holley (So./St. Paul, Minn./Harding) in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes
The team has three chances to compete this week with the Macalester Twilight on Wednesday, the Drake Relays on Friday and Drake Alternative on Saturday.
