NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- The men’s track and field team participated in a pair of competitions over the weekend, with solid performances at both the University of Minnesota’s Snowshoe Open and St. Olaf College’s Tostrud Classic.
On Friday at the University Fieldhouse, junior Charlie Gamble (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla) surpassed his personal best by nearly seven seconds in posting a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 4:14.95. He finished fifth overall, with one D-I and another D-II racer finishing ahead of him.
Tom Ballinger (Sr./Wenatchee, Wash./Wenatchee) placed second among conference participants in the 400 meter dash with a time of 50.53 seconds. In the 800 meter race, Jack Delehanty’s (Sr./Madison, Wis./Monona Grove) time of 1:58.43 narrowly missed topping his indoor personal best by .03 seconds.
The 4x400 relay unit, consisting of Michael Sanders (Jr./Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls), Nick Cesarek (Sr./Eagan, Minn./Eastview), Delehanty, and Ballinger, ran the school’s fastest indoor 4x400m time since 1992, finishing at 3:23.34.
The team was also strongly represented at the St. Olaf Tostrud Classic on Saturday. Pole vaulters Evan Franco (Jr./Austin, Texas/James Bowie) and Kane Bechstein (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) achieved personal bests as both cleared 14 feet, becoming the first pair of Knights to do so at same meet. They also moved into the Top 5 all-time at Carleton.
Dylan Bothun (So./Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount) cruised to his first collegiate victory in the 55m hurdles, recording a time of 8.42 seconds. Jameson Siegert (So./Madison, Minn./Lac Qui Parle Valley) showcased his mastery of jumping events by winning the triple jump and placing third in the high jump.
The Knights compete at the Pre-MIAC meet on Friday, Feb. 27 at Macalester.
