Knights Drop Pair to IIAC Squads

ROCHESTER, Minn. — The Carleton College softball team got off to a great start but could not maintain the momentum in dropping a pair of games to undefeated squads from the Iowa Conference. One big inning doomed the Knights in a 9-4 loss to University of Dubuque followed by a 10-1 setback versus No. 7 Luther College.

Thanks in part to a solo home run from starting pitcher Keelin Davis (So./Woodinville, Wash./Woodinville), the Knights (1-3) carried a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning against Dubuque. That’s when things started to go awry.

The Spartans totaled eight hits—five of them going for extra bases—in the frame and scored eight times, during a 4-1 deficit into a 9-4 advantage.

Things didn’t get any easier for the Knights against the nationally-ranked Luther squad. While Carleton hurlers Kaitlin Bagley (Sr./Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) and Jenny Forster (Sr./Ledyard, Conn./Ledyard) managed to limit the Norse to a season-low scoring output, it did not matter as the Knights were limited to only four hits—all singles—and a lone run.

Davis finished the day with a team-best three hits.

The Knights will step away from competition for the remainder of winter term and finals. Carleton opens a 12-game Spring Break trip to Florida with contests against Messiah College and UW-River Falls on March 19.
