MINNEAPOLIS — The Carleton College softball team was swept for the third time in as many doubleheaders, falling at Augsburg College by scores of 4-1 and 3-2.
In the opener, the Knights grabbed the lead as Katrina Harper (Sr./Columbia Heights, Minn./Columbia Heights) reached via a bunt single, stole second base, and scored on Micaela LaRose’s (Jr./Waconia, Minn./Holy Family) base hit to left field.
For a while that appeared to be enough run support for Carleton pitcher Keelin Davis (So./Woodinville, Wash./Woodinville), who yielded only a bunt single over the first four innings. The Auggies finally solved her for a run in the fifth and added three more in the sixth.
Carleton got two baserunners aboard in the final frame and had the tying run at the plate, but the Knights could not complete the rally. Carleton out-hit the Auggies in the 7-6 in the contest but went just 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
Game two was a back-and-forth affair. Augsburg scored first on Lauren Torborg’s solo home run. Carleton knotted things up in the third as Jenny Ramey (Sr./Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) delivered a bunt single, stole second base, advanced on a groundout, and came home when Harper stole second base.
Augsburg re-gained the lead with a lone tally in the fourth, but again Carleton countered, this time plating an unearned run in the sixth after Kaitlin Bagley (Sr./Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) steered a single through the hole plating Caroline Duke (Fy./Evanston, Ill./Evanston).
The game remained deadlocked until the bottom of the seventh when the Auggies strung together three hits for the walkoff victory.
Carleton will look to bounce back against national No. 20 University of St. Thomas on Tuesday, April 15. First pitch from Knights field is slated for 3:30 p.m.
