Knights start Florida trip with two tough losses

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Carleton College softball team opened the competition portion of its Spring Break trip with two games on Thursday. The schedule maker did the Knights no favors by having them open up their visit to the Sunshine State against Tufts University, the No. 2 team in the nation. Carleton ended up absorbing a 9-1 setback and then dropped a tough 1-0 decision to D’Youville College in the day's second game.

In the opener, the Jumbos pushed across an unearned run in the second inning and tacked out four more in the third. Tufts added three additional tallies in the next inning via Jo Clair’s fourth home run on the young season.

Carleton strung together a trio of hits leading to its lone run in the top of the fifth, but an unearned run for Tufts in the bottom of the fifth frame finished the game at 9-1.

Game two was a pitcher’s duel between Keelin Davis (So./Woodinville, Wash./Woodinville) and the Spartans’ Kalie McHenry.

D’Youville picked up a two-out RBI single in the top of the first, but that would be enough in the 1-0 win. Davis fanned eight and yielded just four hits and two walks.

The Knights threatened in the bottom of the first as Jenny Ramey (Sr./Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) double, stole third but was stranded 60 feet away. Micaela LaRose (Jr./Waconia, Minn./Holy Family) doubled with one out in the fourth, but once again the Knights were turned aside. MeHenry struck out the side in the seventh to close out her three-hitter.

Carleton’s Florida trip continues on Friday, March 21, as the Knights face McDaniel College under the lights.
