TUCSON, Ariz. – On day one of its Spring Break trip, the Carleton College softball team grabbed early leads in both games. However, the Knights could not maintain their advantage, falling 6-4 to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and 7-6 against Graceland University (Iowa).
In game one, Jenny Ramey (So./Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) got the trip started off right for the Carleton (1-5) offense, smacking a home run to open the bottom of the first.
UW-La Crosse seized the lead with a pair of unearned runs in the second, two more tallies in the third and another in the fifth. The Knights got an unearned run in the fourth and two more in the sixth on a two-out, two-run double by Jocelyn Friedman (Jr./Mount Kisco, N.Y./Fox Lane).
Micaela LaRose (Fy./Waconia, Minn./Holy Family) absorbed the loss, yielding four runs—only one earned—over the front 3.0 innings.
The nightcap started in fine fashion as Carleton pushed across four runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by Kaitlin Bagley’s (So./Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) two-run double.
Graceland (8-7) sliced the deficit in half as they notched an unearned run in the second frame and another in the third. After Chelsea Yost (Jr./Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji) doubled home another run in the fifth, Graceland knotted the score with a three-run bottom of the inning, including two more unearned tallies.
Carleton re-took the lead during the top of the seventh inning as Holly Buttrey (So./Thetford, Vt./Thetford Academy) delivered a two-out RBI single, but the Yellowjackets stung the Knights for two runs in the last turn at bat.
The Knights have two games scheduled for Monday, March 19. They start the day with a contest against North Central College (Ill.) and finish with an afternoon affair with Hastings College (Neb.)
