TUCSON, Ariz. – Kaitlin Bagley (So./Duluth, Minn./Denfeld) had a team-best four hits on the day, but the Carleton College softball team lost re-matches with No. 18 Carthage College and Calvin College by scores of 9-1 (5 inn.) and 5-3.
In the opener versus Carthage, Jenny Ramey (So./Cottage Grove, Minn./New Life Academy) singled to open the game and came home on Bagley’s double. Katrina Harper (So./Columbia Heights, Minn./Columbia Heights) followed with a single putting runners on the corners, but that would be the last Carleton’s last baserunner of the contest.
The Lady Reds (10-0) continued the best start in their program’s history, collecting 13 hits on the way to the victory.
Calvin College (5-7) drew first blood in the day’s second game, but Carleton (1-11) responded with a trio of runs in the bottom of the second. Ramey doubled in one run, and Kelsey Parsons (Jr./Golden Valley, Minn./Hopkins) chased home the others with another two-bagger.
Carleton missed out on additional scoring opportunities, stranding six baserunners in scoring position, four of them over the front three frames. That proved costly as Calvin plated an unearned run in the fourth, then rallied for three more unearned tallies in the seventh inning to pull out the win.
After working a perfect fifth and sixth innings, Carleton reliever Claire Willeck (Fy./Eden Prarie, Minn./Eden Prarie) was the tough-luck loser as the defense committed three errors in the final inning.
Carleton closes its Spring Break trip with Friday morning contests against Whitworth University and St. Gregory’s University.
