WINONA, Minn. – The Carleton College softball team’s final regular-season doubleheader, scheduled for Wednesday, May 1 at Saint Mary’s University, has been postponed due to cold and rain. The games will not be made up as both squads prepare to open pool play at the MIAC Playoffs on Friday.
The persistent wet weather throughout April and into May prevented the Knights from playing the full slate of conference games. After repeated attempts to re-schedule, Carleton was unable to make room in the calendar for home games against Concordia College and road contests at Saint Mary’s. The Knights also had to cancel non-conference competitions against Martin Luther College, Bethany Lutheran College, and University of Wisconsin-Stout.
With none of the teams able to play their full allotment of conference games, the MIAC announced last week a format change—for this season only—that has all 12 teams participating in the conference tournament. The MIAC Playoffs will now run Friday, May 3, through Sunday, May 5, at Caswell Park in Mankato, Minn. The new format features four three-team pools playing round-robin games on Friday, May 3, with the four first-place teams advancing from each pool into a four-team, double-elimination tournament on Saturday, May 4, and Sunday, May 5.
Carleton advances to the MIAC Playoffs for the first time since the event began in 2004.
The MIAC will announce the seeding and full schedule for the conference playoffs at a later time.
